Over 100,000 New Leisure Vehicles Registered for the First Time

Press Release

Last year, more than 107,000 new leisure vehicles were registered in Germany. That is almost a third more than in 2019. For the first time, the 100,000 mark for new registrations was exceeded. New registrations of motor caravans were particularly impressive, with an increase of around 45 percent. Over 78,000 newly registered motor caravans represent a new record. The caravan segment also grew strongly by over 8 percent and achieved the best result since 1994. The trend is expected to continue in 2021.
Caravanning is the holiday trend of 2020 in Germany. Never before have more Germans travelled with motor caravans and caravans, as last year’s new registration figures show. In the past twelve months, 107,203 new recreational vehicles were registered in the Federal Republic. This corresponds to an outstanding increase of 32.6 percent compared to 2019. For the first time ever, the 100,000 mark for new registrations was surpassed – and that after a corona-related slump in the spring. 2020 is already the fourth record year and the seventh growth year in a row for the caravanning industry in Germany.

A decade of records – over 78,000 new motor caravans registered

A new record every year – that sums up the past decade in the motor caravan market. In 2020, too, new motor caravan registrations reached a new record of 78,055 vehicles. Compared to the previous year, this means an outstanding growth of 44.8 percent. In the past three years alone, new motor caravan registrations have almost doubled.

Caravan registrations with best result in over 25 years

Caravan registrations also recorded a more than respectable result despite the pandemic-related slump in the spring and a sharp decline in economic output in 2020. A total of 29,148 vehicles were registered between January and December – the highest number since 1994. The 8.2 per cent increase represents the seventh consecutive annual rise.

“Caravanning stands for diverse and self-determined holiday planning and is therefore attractive to more and more people,” says Daniel Onggowinarso, Managing Director of the caravanning industry association CIVD. “This is all the more true under the current conditions. With a motor caravan or caravan, you travel individually and only with people from your own household and are largely self-sufficient thanks to your own living, sleeping, cooking and sanitary facilities. The pandemic has accelerated fundamental and long-term developments in tourism such as sustainability, regional and individual travel or the trend back to nature. Because of the special suitability of caravanning for these customer needs and the current situation, the growth in new registrations should continue in 2021,” says Onggowinarso.
