Since October 1998 passenger car-trailer-combinations can be operated with more than the usual 80 km/h on motorways [“Autobahnen”] if several criteria are met. The German road traffic regulations have been amended in October 2005 for a second time. Today 100 km/h on motorways are possible, if
- the trailer-tyres are less than six years of age and at least load index “L”,
- the caravan is fitted with hydraulic shock absorbers,
- if the towing vehicle [max. 3.5 t] is fitted with ABS.
If a stabilization device according to ISO 11555 is fitted to the trailer or if the towing vehicle disposes over a trailer stabilizing system the total mass of the trailer [caravan] must not exceed the mass in running order of the towing vehicle.
